Hello queens!

Welcome to Girls Will Be Girls! We’re so excited to see you! It’s been a long time coming! Much like a cat stuck in a fish tank, we’re a little bit unsure of what to say and how to say it. But we think we look great and we’re here to have a fun time.

Girls Will Be Girls, or GWBG for the people with a busy day, came about in a stranger’s living room after too much pizza and maybe not enough beer. I (Claire) wanted to make a blog full of feminist rage for the world we live in, with maybe one or two beautiful thoughts about creating a better one. I (Tenna) wanted to start a web series of tea-drinking and truth-bombing hilarity, intent on capturing the ridiculous double standards that are forced upon women every day. Fortunately, these two ideas merged far more seamlessly than we previously imagined and Girls Will Be Girls was born.

In your time, you might have heard the utterly asinine expression, “boys will be boys”. This phrase attempts to remove personal responsibility from men and boys, and suggests that, while girls must explain their every move and feel guilt or shame when participating in ‘non-feminine’ behaviours, boys cannot help “being boys” and will not be subject to answer for their actions when they are in the wrong. This phrase is often used around boys in their childhood, which then reinforces bad behaviour in adults. Now, the first PSA of GWBG is coming up hot so prepare yourself: If you are born with a penis, you are not genetically predisposed to be an asshole. That being said, your dick also doesn’t give you a “get-out-of-jail-free” card to absolve you of accountability for your actions. So, if you agree that “boys will be boys” is a superb expression, then let’s just start off by saying that maybe GWBG is not for you. If you think that every individual, regardless of their sex or gender, should take responsibility for their actions, then read on. We’ve got snacks to make and things to discuss.

The premise of GWBG is simple: we are offering a space for unapologetic ladies from all backgrounds to say and draw and write and sing unapologetic things. To be proud that the thoughts in their head might make some people angry. To be respected and observed in an ongoing conversation about the issues that plague their lives – even when those issues feel singular to them. Sexism is easy to ignore when it works in your favour, and GWBG wants to make sure that we are holding everyone accountable.

So, here we are. By some miracle, we’ve gathered/bribed a bunch of intelligent, articulate and talented ladies who have lent their innumerable skills to GWBG and as a result, we are proud to exhibit different works in a variety of mediums from a variety of creators. Read on, my friends. Read on.

If you have any questions about us, want to contribute something funky or simply want to chat, you can contact us at gwbgblog@gmail.com. If you’re Claire’s mother, then please don’t ask her if she’ll be home for dinner tonight because the answer is always ‘yes’. If that’s everything, then let us say a final welcome and thank you so much for being here. We can’t wait for this to begin.

With all our love and feminist dreamz,

Claire & Tenna xo
